Beyond The Music with Karabo Shongwe (aka illy the host)

There's an old saying which goes " if your dreams don't scare you ,then you not dreaming big enough"
Now if you are a young man from a certain village in a certain province with certain dreams and no plans on how to achieved them and probably think they are unachievable, here's something to give you some perspective.
Karabo Shongwe (aka illy the host) is one of the very key and important game players of our time. Having started out as a rapper, he is now a presenter and content producer of an award winning online Hip Hop show "Hip Hop Live SA".

The show was conceptualized and brought to life in the Limpopo Province and has gone to feature numerous artists, both emerging and established from all walks of these South African streets.
The show, which has become somewhat a movement and a pride of Limpopo, has made big strides in a short space of time. Illy and the team have managed to provide and maintain this platform. Besides handling the content and presenting the show, he  also delves as a model. Yep! Your boy fully in with it.

And he says he's enjoying making discoveries about himself, his capabilities and the industry as a whole, not just the Hip Hop space and he says there's more of him to come. Probably why he has taken on modeling, so look out for him in a ramp and catalogue or ad near you.

"You could say that I am that [a triple threader] because honestly I can't box myself kare I'm just a presenter or model and yes there's more coming from me. Each and every day I learn and discover new things in the industry
that might even take me away from this Hip Hop culture." We might even never get to hear from Illflow (his rap aka) ever again as he says the rap life is sometimes that's no longer a greater part of his life plans and pursuits. No all is lost though, he'll still be appearing on features here and there, take part in some online rap challenges and enjoy the artistry.
"I wouldn't mind dropping one or two songs once in a while but for fun though. Thing is, I'm loving what I'm becoming so rapping isn't the part of the plan and I'm trying as much as i can to stay away from such negative vibes[that the rap game might bring]" Fair enough.

Now, Hip Hop Live SA (HHLSA) is and has been a great platform for emerging rappers and just all round game players from all and every part of Mzansi, even some parts of the Continent like Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Ghana. The show speaks to profiling the artists about their music, background and thoughts on the industry.

Speaking on the reasons of the inception of the show and if they are still keeping to its mandate illy explains:

"It was just seeing the gap between "unknown rappers / hard working individuals" and the people up there with the platforms ,so we thought of being the middleman and push the culture to the fullest.
And mos definitely we still are, though now and then we try to get this famous people on our platform so people can be more exposed to our work ( HipHopLiveSA )"

And he adds on that being a part of HHLSA has opened up and exposed him to some insight, information, people, places and a side of the culture he otherwise wouldn't be, had he just remained a rapper and not ventured into it. " I don't wanna lie. I didn't know much about S.A Hip Hop besides what abo Lee Kasumba, C Live, Siz&Scoop, Hype, Slaghuis, Lee Club, Touch and others did  for S.A Hip Hop. Only when I put my feet into the game i started to understand things you won't even see on the outside , so I'm grateful for what #HipHopLiveSA did and exposed me to.
Illy, like most, recognises the moves that the local scene is making and says he's happy to be a part of the SA Hip Hop culture "Look we getting international recognition,  there's more strictly hip-hop paying events, Trap is doing its things, rappers are focusing on business than just rapping. Digital world is taking over and rappers are getting endorsements."

And who wouldn't be! Things are moving at a great pace. There's money, recognition, talent and avenues. And he urges  emerging rappers to make use of those avenues.
"Emerging rappers got to do what they got to do and stop this thing of complaining over the internet!"  He also points out the scene at his home province as promising, even though things could be better. " Agoswane bana ba batho bazama goberekiÅ¡ana. There's no much happening besides beefs and ego's but we getting there.
As much as some OGs are b#tch#ng up and giving these kids some tough times, all they have to do is to unite and put in more work. Don't take advice from some of this OGs though, they don't wanna see y'all shining. Just do you and do your research ." Sounding advice right?

Even in an industry where sometimes people who don't like you will pretend to just to get you to help them out, or vice versa, Karabo says some of the lessons he's learned are all about keeping positive vibes, avoiding beefs, negativity and focusing and investing in his own businesses and brand.

Speaking of focusing on your own. HHLSA has recently dropped an all star female mix tape that you might just wanna check out.

" HerFreedomOfSpeech is a 23 tracks compilation project featuring all the emerging talented sisters in Hip Hop. The plan behind it was to unite em to work together, not only in August but any time they feel like it and the feedback has been amazing. Already did MetroFM twice cos they loved em. We did SK FM and more interviews for them are still coming.
I'm doing the most for them to be heard. We featured Miss KK from Tanzania,  Nina Grande from Zimbabwe and the rest ke south African. S/O to everyone that's showing love. The media that's open to hearing us and the supporters for getting the work.

The HHLSA brand is steadily growing, having bagged 2 SAHHAs already, having released several mixtapes and featured artists ranging from Kwesta, Proverb, PDotO,Youngsta CPT to international heavyweights like Skyzoo.
The show, is no doubt elevating and making a great impact. But Karabo still has big dreams of where he'd like to see it go and what's to become of it.
"I'd like to Host battles like "Summer Madness",  to drop tapes every month,  to own a TV Show,  actually to be as big as Sway kinda brand." says Illy.
Well, nothing holds dreams impossible. With the moves that he's on and the determination that he's got, we thinks man's onto something great.

Follow him here and get the work

The Motswako Prince of Maftown, Sly YoHighness

It looks like Sly YoHighness might just got next as the Motswako Prince. It's now been a long while since we've had a proper Motswako wave breakthrough. Remember when the Morafe and Tuks wave hit, or when Gata lenna came out, Fifi Cooper and the late HHPs consistency and many comebacks? A lot of us have been wondering "who got next"? With the fall of guys like Notshi and KT struggling to properly cement his stance, is Sly the guy to look out for? I hit him up through the socials, to find out what he's been up to and if he really got his sight set on the throne. So how did he get into this whole music and creative space thing? He says he's always been artistic and one thing led to the other . "I love & have always loved acting. I'm very out there & funny too (yes, he is). So once I started writing I kinda never stopped, though I always felt it's a farfetched dream or whatever but I kept on writing, even if it was just for mysel

Tan89Media Tips For Emerging Talent

Attention Emerging Talent!! So, for the years that I have been dealing with and working alongside emerging talent, more so, artists. I have noticed some behavior pertaining to their brand. That could be credited to lack of experience and knowledge but it could also be ignorance and lack of proactivity. A lot of talent lacks a lot of knowledge of their industries. The very same field they want to occupy one day. Its super essential for anyone to know as much as possible when it comes to a dream they are pursuing or a skill they are great at or anything for that matter they say they are passionate about. The very basic things to know are many times overlooked and undermined and they play a huge role in how you develop as a brand, how you are perceived, and it shows just how serious or not one is about whatever it is they are pursuing. I have listed and broken down six (6) tips for emerging/ up and coming brands/ talents. Hopefully they will serve helpful to some. 1. The bas
