Your #SAHHA2019 Nominees

The South African Hip Hop Awards are taking place earlier than usual this year. They happen on the 20th of November 2019 at the Gold Reef City Lyric Theatre.

This year's categories and nominees have recently been announced. The live announcement went down on Instagram and Facebook, true to this years theme which is "the revolution will be computerized"

There's a couple of categories that's been canned like Kings Of Province, Crews and Graffiti.
Now, looking at this year's categories and doing a lil comparison with last year's, or even further than that
I Wonder if there's been any solid growth in the game and if the awards are risking becoming monotonous..

The most refreshing categories is the new entrants on Freshman category , new sound and artists on collabos and remixes at times.
The rest of the categories though, seem to be a repetition of previous contenders.
"Best Lyricist" is easily predictable. The list rotates around Trilly,CPT,Reason, Stogie. With "Best Female", you already know Gigi and Nadia will be on there.
Cass will always feature on the newly combined Hustler of the Year/MVP category. Overtime it's been more or less the same people.

The issue for me is that these awards are making the game seem to lack growth. And maybe that is the actual case.

Maybe the submission criteria needs to be revisited and revised. Where there enough releases and the selection panel chose the most popular?
Where are the females? The ones from before and the new ones? How many DJs do we have that are pushing besides the usual suspects?
Maybe "popularity" should not be a factor on some of the categories. For a "Song of the Year" I can get why it can be a big requirement but it surely shouldn't apply for "Best Mixtape"
And impact shouldn't really be limited to traditional mediums. If doors aren't opened up for new artists to be taken in how will the pool widen up?
And with best producer, why must the number of (popular) songs be a determining factor for eligibility? Shouldn't the producer submit the work they did, then they get judged based on the technical/engineering merits?

Maybe there's no sense in making a fairly known artist a nominee because there's no "value" compared to a Kwesta. But not every talent will get the spotlight nor is popular.

Maybe there's just not enough artists in the country to keep things fresh every year. Maybe artists need more than a year to get inside the commercial streets.
Artists also need to work hard to elevate themselves into standards. Because at the end of the day,you need to be worthy to some level to acquire accolades, maybe the question is "ow much value?"
The upside is that the SAHHAs inspire the bar. Its something a lot of emerging artists aspire to acquire. Strictly for the culture.
I am happy to see Jimmy Wiz bagging a few noms,  Best Lyricist as one of them.
Song of the year and Best Hip Hop show got the most numbers of nominees as usual.

And the biggest thing that we seem to overlook is that artists need to submit to be considered.... but can you submit if you don't meet the set criteria?

Well done and Good luck to all the nominees and recipients. Looking forward to a change and development in due time. To more growth with the awards and the Hip Hop industry, maybe a "Best Hip Hop writer/journo" category in future.

Continuing to support the SAHHAs because right now, they all we got. They are not a charity organization, they have an end goal. They need to be at a certain level of awards standard. They need to be of a certain value to attract the right sponsors, contributors and have a certain appeal.
More so because Hip Hop is still marginalized and fighting its way into the mainstream.

Tickets are available at Computicket from R250.

The Motswako Prince of Maftown, Sly YoHighness

It looks like Sly YoHighness might just got next as the Motswako Prince. It's now been a long while since we've had a proper Motswako wave breakthrough. Remember when the Morafe and Tuks wave hit, or when Gata lenna came out, Fifi Cooper and the late HHPs consistency and many comebacks? A lot of us have been wondering "who got next"? With the fall of guys like Notshi and KT struggling to properly cement his stance, is Sly the guy to look out for? I hit him up through the socials, to find out what he's been up to and if he really got his sight set on the throne. So how did he get into this whole music and creative space thing? He says he's always been artistic and one thing led to the other . "I love & have always loved acting. I'm very out there & funny too (yes, he is). So once I started writing I kinda never stopped, though I always felt it's a farfetched dream or whatever but I kept on writing, even if it was just for mysel

Tan89Media Tips For Emerging Talent

Attention Emerging Talent!! So, for the years that I have been dealing with and working alongside emerging talent, more so, artists. I have noticed some behavior pertaining to their brand. That could be credited to lack of experience and knowledge but it could also be ignorance and lack of proactivity. A lot of talent lacks a lot of knowledge of their industries. The very same field they want to occupy one day. Its super essential for anyone to know as much as possible when it comes to a dream they are pursuing or a skill they are great at or anything for that matter they say they are passionate about. The very basic things to know are many times overlooked and undermined and they play a huge role in how you develop as a brand, how you are perceived, and it shows just how serious or not one is about whatever it is they are pursuing. I have listed and broken down six (6) tips for emerging/ up and coming brands/ talents. Hopefully they will serve helpful to some. 1. The bas
