Artist Feature: Slang G

KO is probably the most notable game player right now from the Mpumalanga province and with reason.
With that said, there's a lot of talent emerging that want to carry that baton and represent their province as he is.
From Witbank,Nelspruit Middleburg,Graskop and all the other areas near and within.
One such person is Bushbuckridge native, Slang G. An all round creative, Slang mostly delves as a rapper/ engineer and an entrepreneur.
His come up is filled with milestones that have kept him going for all these years.

But his most recent and probably his greatest so far, was his nomination at the 2017 South African Hip Hop Awards (SAHHA) under the category "King of Province" for ( Made in MP).
Though he didn't bag the win, he's gone to continue doing great things under the "MIM" banner.
He proudly carries Mpumalanga on his bag, and this was probably his best move ever. His own solo efforts as a rapper has seen him release music ,
that afforded him the chance to perform on the same stage as some of the country's top acts and his fellow peers.

His music has been playlisted and played on over 30 stations nationwide. Slang G is one of the hard working ones who's serious about getting his.

What/who sparked your interest in the Hip Hop culture, specifically music?
I was first introduced to Hip Hop by 50 Cent when “Get Rich Or die trying”[album] was initially released, at the the time I couldn’t fully understand everything he was saying but there was something about the way the music sounded that drew me to it.

It felt as though he was talking directly to me. I was hooked and there was no turning back from that point.
Through him I learned about Eminem, Jay Z and became a student of the culture as a whole.
From the fashion to the graphics and all the way to the dancing.

How would you describe your sound and what inspires your content?

I’ve recently become more soulful in terms of my sound ,especially since I have started producing more and more of my own music.

I want people to start dreaming again, to start believing in their own ability to be great again ,that’s what inspires me and everyday people living everyday normal lives are an inspiration too because I relate to those people and they relate to me. So to in short the phrase “Be Yourself and dream big” explains what I’m about.

What's the Hip Hop scene like in Mpumalanga?
Hip-hop in MP is crazy. I think people are finally catching on and it is an exciting time for us. We have our challenges but the reception is growing ,the audience is expanding and there has never been at better time for Hip-hop in Mpumalanga. The love is beyond measure.

What are some of the lessons you've picked up about the culture so far?
There are a number of lessons I have learned firstly

·         Work hard and dream big because dreams do come true.

·         It's true Money/Power corrupts and it has even corrupted this culture

·         Everyone has a story to tell

·         Hip hop is about expressing yourself fully and being the best you possible.
What do you think is the biggest huddle/challenges facing emerging rappers today?

I think it's knowledge or the lack thereof rather and also the financial strains of starting a brand (any brand, as an artists you should handle yourself as such)
Knowing what to do and also knowing what you want, knowing what it will take to acquire those things for your brand is a constant struggle because every risk one takes needs to be calculated.

Money plays a huge part in the building of any business. You need to be mobile, you need to always be presentable, and you need other elements such as marketing and so on.

Are you proud of your first ever record or would you rather it stay in the past?(why)

I’d rather that record stay buried lol, look it was awesome at the time because I just wanted to hear myself on a track and I managed to do that but now that I listen to it the joint simply can't compete.
It was fun but there were a lot of things not done at the time. The mix and master was terrible to say the least, I was just starting out and i was an awful lyrist at the time, so yeah.

Do you think the beef serves any purpose, especially for emerging artists?
Yes and no, I think it depends who you are beefing. It’s always easy for people to be in favour of the underdog so if you're beefing someone “bigger” than you then it may work to your benefit but at the same time it can backfire on you if that beef gets you “black balled”. Like my mentor Eman always says, "pick your battles wisely."

What's "Made in MP" all about and what's in the works for it?

“MIM” is an annual event hosted for the pure benefit of Mpumalanga artists and DJs as well as anyone with any thing to showcase provided ,of cause it’s HIP HOP in nature. Next April we hosting in the beautiful city of Nelspruit and it’s going to be epic.

What should we look out for from Slang G?
MORE WORK! I'm working on my project titled Colours which is due next year July. I’ll be producing for a few big names. And hoping some new visuals will be dropping too.

Slang G is doing  some amazing things! Repping your hood is a beautiful thing man. Home pride is something special and you will get the love.
So while you wait for that work, he has a song out with Producer SimmyOnTheBeat titled "Batman"

The Motswako Prince of Maftown, Sly YoHighness

It looks like Sly YoHighness might just got next as the Motswako Prince. It's now been a long while since we've had a proper Motswako wave breakthrough. Remember when the Morafe and Tuks wave hit, or when Gata lenna came out, Fifi Cooper and the late HHPs consistency and many comebacks? A lot of us have been wondering "who got next"? With the fall of guys like Notshi and KT struggling to properly cement his stance, is Sly the guy to look out for? I hit him up through the socials, to find out what he's been up to and if he really got his sight set on the throne. So how did he get into this whole music and creative space thing? He says he's always been artistic and one thing led to the other . "I love & have always loved acting. I'm very out there & funny too (yes, he is). So once I started writing I kinda never stopped, though I always felt it's a farfetched dream or whatever but I kept on writing, even if it was just for mysel

Tan89Media Tips For Emerging Talent

Attention Emerging Talent!! So, for the years that I have been dealing with and working alongside emerging talent, more so, artists. I have noticed some behavior pertaining to their brand. That could be credited to lack of experience and knowledge but it could also be ignorance and lack of proactivity. A lot of talent lacks a lot of knowledge of their industries. The very same field they want to occupy one day. Its super essential for anyone to know as much as possible when it comes to a dream they are pursuing or a skill they are great at or anything for that matter they say they are passionate about. The very basic things to know are many times overlooked and undermined and they play a huge role in how you develop as a brand, how you are perceived, and it shows just how serious or not one is about whatever it is they are pursuing. I have listed and broken down six (6) tips for emerging/ up and coming brands/ talents. Hopefully they will serve helpful to some. 1. The bas
